Bergen Ferry Port

Norway’s climate should be your primary consideration when deciding when to visit. The main tourist season (which coincides with Norwegian and other European school holidays) runs from mid-June to mid-August. During this period, public transport runs frequently, tourist offices and tourist sights are open longer hours and many hotels offer cheaper rates.

That said, Norway is at its best and brightest for much of the period from May to September. Late May is particularly pleasant: flowers are blooming, fruit trees blossoming (especially in Hardangerfjord), daylight hours are growing longer and most hostels, camp sites and tourist sights are open but uncrowded. Be aware, however, that if you’ve come to Norway to hike, many routes and huts won’t be open until late June or early July. Smaller mountain roads usually don’t open until June.

North of the Arctic Circle, the true midnight sun is visible at least one day a year, and at Nordkapp it stays out from 13 May to 29 July.

At any time of the year, be aware that extremes of temperature are always possible; temperatures over 30°C in summer and below -30ºC in winter aren’t uncommon. Unless you’re an avid skier or hope to glimpse the aurora borealis, Norway’s cold dark winters can be trying for visitors; public transport runs infrequently; most hostels and camp sites are closed; and sights, museums and tourist offices open only limited hours, if at all.

The Norwegian year is also chock-full of outstanding festivals and some of them are well worth planning your trip around.

Cities & Places of Interest

The main cities and towns in Denmark frequented by visitors are:-

  • Oslo - the capital and largest city of Norway, with museums of national importance, a beautiful setting and lively nightlife and cultural scene
  • Bergen - Once the capital of Norway, old Hanseatic trading center with a rich culture and dramatic scenery, Norway's second largest city. Wonderfully cute wooden buildings, a magnificent mountain setting and tons of nightlife and atmosphere. This is your gateway to the western fjords. The city has been dubbed "the rainiest city in Europe" with an average of 250 days of rainfall a year. Bring an umbrella.
  • Bodø - The gateway to the magnificent Lofoten islands. And the place of Saltstraumen, the worlds strongest maelstrom.
  • Drammen - Once known as industrial and grimy, but recent refurbishing has made Drammen an enjoyable side trip from Oslo.
  • Fredrikstad - A magnificent old town stands out from the rest of the rather nondescript city. Brilliant as a day trip from Oslo.
  • Kristiansand - The jolly capital of the South.
  • Stavanger - The fourth largest city, and the third largest urban area. Commercially important due to the oil business. The wooden, cobbled central area is one of the most charming places in Norway. Home to one of Norway's medieval churches, you can also visit Iron Age homes, stone age caves, and sites where the Viking kings used to meet at Ullandhaugtårnet. Stavanger is where Erik the Red was born.
  • Tromsø - A magnificent, modern cathedral and absolutely no polar bears roaming the streets.
  • Trondheim - Famous for its stunning cathedral (Nidarosdomen). Wonderful riverside wharfs, wooden buildings and the best student nightlife in Norway give beautiful, leafy Trondheim its charm.

Places of exceptional beauty and interest in Norway are:-

  • Atlanterhavsveien - "The most beautiful road in the world". A unique road connected with spectacular bridges surrounded by the wilderness of the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Jostedalsbreen - The largest glacier on the European mainland.
  • Jotunheimen - A majestic landscape and home of Norway's highest mountains.
  • Lofoten - Experience the midnight sun in this traditional fishing district in the northern province with islands and mountains.
  • Nordkapp - This cliff is the northernmost point of continental Europe. Excellent place to experience the midnight sun.
  • Sognefjorden - Glaciers, mountains and picturesque towns are but a few of the sights on the Sognefjord. Flåm and Nærøyfjorden (also a UNESCO World Heritage site) are parts of the mighty Sognefjorden system.

Norway is a big country and getting around, particularly up north, is expensive and time-consuming. The best way to see the Norwegian wilderness and countryside is by having access to your own vehicle. This way you can stop wherever you want, admire the view and venture onto smaller roads.

Norway

Norway is, by any standards, one of the most beautiful countries on earth, but that beauty brings with it a responsibility that weighs heavily upon Norwegians. For here is a people with an enduring love for the natural world that is profoundly etched into the national character.

In the past, this was expressed in the Norwegian tradition of isolated farmsteads that colonised the most secluded corners of the country’s wilderness.

Increasingly, however, the irrevocable movement of Norwegians towards the cities – cities that are themselves places of great beauty, such as Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger and Tromsø – has altered the relationship between Norwegians and their natural world.

Ferry connections between Norway and Denmark, Germany, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Sweden and also the UK provide straightforward links. Most ferry operators offer package deals that include taking a car and passengers, and most lines offer substantial discounts for seniors, students and children.

Scheduled ferry services to and from Norway are operated by Color Line, DFDS Seaways, Fjord Line, Stena Line and Smyril Line ferries.
